One hundred thirteen years ago, just before midnight on April 14, 1912, the RMS Titanic collided with an iceberg approximately 400 miles from the Newfoundland coast. Two and a half hours later, at 2:20 a.m., the ship sank with around 1,500 passengers still on board. The only remaining eyewitness to the most famous sea journey ever undertaken is the Titanic herself, and it seems she will have more to reveal about the sinking for some time to come.
It is a story many first heard or read as children; a tale so fantastical and ultimately tragic that it commanded a substantial rental space in our developing young minds. Setting aside decades of tall tales and lore, bloated Hollywood budgets, over-reverbed Celine Dion, and a recent hubris-laden, technologically upgraded sequel sponsored by OceanGate, the old girl herself is, at last, being heard above the din.
A new, immersive investigation is in progress due primarily to the results of a scanning project that produced the first high-resolution, 3D digital twin of the Titanic. Her bow lies upright on the seafloor while sitting 600m away, the stern is a heap of mangled metal. The damage was caused by the ship crashing into the sea floor after breaking in half. The wreck was examined using over 700,000 images taken from underwater robots and compiled in 2023, but now the picture has become clearer.
There is a simulation that accompanies all this, which suggests that punctures in the hull the size of A4 pieces of paper ultimately led to the ship's demise. Ice did enter some of the cabins, corroborating several eyewitness accounts, and a long, thin line of gashes sealed the Titanic’s fate. Currently, it holds back a complete reveal, as lower sections of the bow are covered with sediment. However, one of the most fascinating outcomes of this work is proof that the lights remained on for more than two hours after the fatal glancing blow.
For years, experts have been studying one of the Titanic's substantial boiler rooms; it is now clearly visible on the scan because it is located at the rear of the bow section, where the ship broke in two pieces. Passengers reported that the lights were still on as the ship plunged beneath the waves. The digital replica shows that some of the boilers are concave, suggesting they were still operating when submerged in the seawater. A valve was also discovered in an open position on the stern's deck, indicating that steam continued to flow into the electricity generating system.
I have been fascinated by the RMS Titanic my whole life. What began as a childish craving for a good story evolved as more information about the events of April 14, 1912, literally came to light. Identifying one of the boilers was the official confirmation that she was found around 1 am on September 1, 1985. I was sleeping with a smile, knowing that 48 hours prior, I had finally come to grips with Knopfler's intro to "Money for Nothing,” yes, that was Sting on the track! The next day, Peter Jennings’ reportage about the discovery turned my smile into a gaping mouth of wonder.
Joseph Bell and his engineering team continued to shovel coal into the furnaces. The turmoil on the deck, attempting to reach a lifeboat and actively participating in survival, did not occur in complete darkness; the inky view, accompanied by frantic haste above in the crow’s nest hours earlier, doomed lookout Frederick Fleet’s infamous, yet too late, proclamation. If Fleet only had the binoculars repeatedly requested—if ice warnings were given more credence—if the ship wasn’t going so bloody fast—too many ifs.
One hundred thirteen years on, and we know now that on that dark, icy night of hubristic conceit, Joe and the lads kept at it. The next shovelful, perhaps the last—some light was better than no light.
